The Human Body

We have started a new science unit on the Human Body! This is an exciting unit with lots of connections to the fact that we have been created down to every last detail by God. This is a unit with lots of discussion, and lots of opportunity to display knowledge. Our first project was getting our Human Body models started. Each new body system will be created to fit into the skeleton for each group. The students will also be labeling different items on their models as we move through the unit. Here is a picture of our skeletons!

Science Fair and Art

Last week, we concluded our work on our Science Fair projects by participating in the LCS Science Fair. The students had the opportunity to be judged by volunteers, and share the knowledge they have gained through this project. The students did a great job of their projects, and they were excellent at the Fair. Below are some pictures of students with their projects.

We finished the week off by working on an art project. This project required a lot of focus, as it was completed in layers, step by step, using only charcoal. The students did a fantastic job-- I am proud to have their art on our bulletin boards!

The Order of Good Cheer in the Making

In SS, we are learning about the French in Canada. The winter of 1604-1605 was terrible for the French. Samuel de Champlain helped to organize dinner parties to help the time pass. These dinner parties consisted of decorations, entertainment, plays, and food! As a grade 5 group, we are putting on our own Order of Good Cheer!

5HP has been assigned a play, as well as decorations. Today, students were painting signs, making crests, and practicing plays. Below is a picture of some students painting a sign to identify our location as Port Royal.

Science Fair

The LCS Science Fair is coming quickly! The students have had some time in class to go over the different elements with me, and also with Mrs. Schraml. By this point, your child should be ready to start their experiment, if they have kept up with assignments that have been given. Students have had three assignments due already, and it is so important to keep up with these days to prevent stress as the Science Fair approaches. If you have any questions about Science Fair, please let me know!

Mimio and Science

We have had an awesome week in 5HP! Here are some of the highlights:

1. We have been given the opportunity to test out a Mimio (interactive white board). This has been very exciting for the students! They love interacting with it, and seeing all that it can do. Below you can see a couple pictures of students recreating a map of the major Empires involved in European Trade.

2. We have started our new Science unit on Physical and Chemical Changes in Matter. The students have been studying the properties and characteristics of different substances, and today, we were able to work on a project that combined what we are learning in science, with art, and also a team building exercise. We completed a sharpie tie dye project, which demonstrated an irreversible physical change. We discussed the properties and characteristics of all the materials involved, and then we mixed them together! The results were amazing!

As a class, we are working on being a team, and what that means. I am putting a huge emphasis on cheering each other on, as opposed to choosing to gossip, leaving others out, and being hurtful. We are together for a long time, so we want to make sure every student has a place in our "team". As such, our t-shirts have become our "jerseys" to represent what we have learned about being part of a team.

3. Another activity we learned was Gizmos. This is an interactive tool for Math and Science. It provides a chance for the students to manipulate objects on their computers to practice different skills. This week we worked on transformations (slide, flip, and rotate).

Happy New Year!

Today we had a wonderful start after a nice relaxing Christmas Break. The students were eager to get back into the swing of things, and we had a great math lesson followed by starting Science Fair, and working on Limericks!

Please find the Bible Memory for January on the BIBLE MEMORY page to the right of this post. You will also find the spelling words for this week and next on the SPELLING page also located to the right of this post.
