Sorry for the delay...

Hello everyone!
Sorry I have not been keeping up with the blog this week. I've been fighting off a terrible cold, and thankfully, I was able to get lots of rest this week, and when I have been at school, the students have been fantastic!
A highlight of this week so far is definitely designing and building gingerbread houses! This project showcases the knowledge the students have gained in our shape and space unit in math. It was wonderful to see them work together in groups, and we were blessed to have some fantastic parents helping us out!
I'm looking forward to a busy last 2 days of school!

Update

We have been keeping busy in 5HP! In Science, we are continuing to learn about more simple machines, and have done multiple experiments to help solidify information from our notes. We are flying through our Shape and Space unit in Math and enjoying some fun group work activities in SS and ELA! We have one last push before Christmas Break, and I'm looking forward to hearing some more poetry and working on Gingerbread Houses for Math next week!

Our day...

Today we spent our time reading Genesis 5, working hard on our math reviews, and also investigating third class levers.

Tomorrow we will be painting our murals, as well as doing a practice math test. The practice math test will be a great way for the students to study and also to know what they need to still review. The actual test on Thursday will be very similar to the practice test in terms of format, but the numbers will be changed so I can accurately test their knowledge of the concepts they have learned over the last few weeks.

Just a reminder- mural painting is MESSY! Please help your child remember to choose their clothing accordingly... Sunday best may not hold up to acrylic paint.

Friday, November 21

We had a great time finishing up our First Peoples research and sketching our murals! We will be painting our murals next Wednesday.

If you are able, please send tweezers to school for a science experiment next Monday or Tuesday. Also, there will be a math test on Patterns and Relations on Thursday, November 27.

Manitoba Museum

Today we spent the day exploring the Manitoba Museum! We learned about the Aboriginal People of the Plains and the Fur Trade in the main gallery, and we also got to see a science demonstration in the science gallery. It was a great day!

Please remember that Bible Memory verses are due tomorrow (Romans 3:23-24).

Field Trip Tomorrow!

We are looking forward to our field trip taking place tomorrow. Please remember to bring a bagged, disposable lunch.
I also want to take this opportunity to thank the class for the gift card and yummy treats that they presented to me today. I have been so blessed by these children. Thank you for an amazing 3 months!

Today the students were assigned their groups for the research project on the First peoples of Canada. They are encouraged to look for books from the public library as well as our school library. Reminders for tomorrow:

Today we enjoyed a piano performance by a duo from Montreal. We learned so much and really enjoyed the show! Reminders for this week:

FINAL COUNTDOWN- I can't believe my time with these students is coming to an end! We have decided to have a small party on Friday. Students are welcome to wear their pajamas, bring a small snack and a board game. I will provide the hot chocolate and cookies.

Tuesday, November 4

Today our field trip form is coming home. Please complete, sign and return as soon as possible. I have also sent an email reminder regarding the Prairie Livestock poster contest. If your child is interested in participating, please have them bring their posters into class by this Friday, November 7. I will submit all of the posters at once.

Gideon Bibles

     Today we had a visit from Mr. Bill Rempel. He presented the students with their own New Testament bible courtesy of the Gideons. He told the students that he has been distributing bibles for 32 years!
     Your child is bringing home their gym clothes to wash. Please return ASAP. The next gym class will be on Wednesday. Also, please return the Boston Pizza home reading forms next week. A new form for November will be sent home today. Don't worry too much about filling in the book titles. I am more concerned that the students are reading at home and the Boston Pizza meal is just an added bonus! Have a wonderful weekend!

Thursday, October 30

Just a reminder that students are encouraged to bring in their items for the Operation Christmas Child boxes that we are compiling as a class. This is an amazing way to make a difference in the life of a less fortunate child! Spelling test and bible memory are due tomorrow. Have a great evening!

Tuesday, October 21

Today a Science review is coming home. We will have a short quiz on Forces next Wednesday, October 29. The quiz will be multiple choice, matching and fill in the blank. Also, our Math unit is coming home. These sheets can stay at home. We have finished an in class review for our Math quiz that will take place on Thursday.

Monday, October 20

Today a new set of spelling words went home. The next spelling test will be Friday, October 31 as there is no school this Friday. We also started our math review today and the students will be tested this Thursday, October 23. Bible memory will be due this Thursday.

Thursday, October 16

In Social Studies we are enjoying our study of the last Ice Age. Early next week, students will start a research project on the animals that were alive during this time.

We have finished our unit on rounding, numeration and place value. We will be doing an in-class review on Monday with a quiz on THURSDAY, OCTOBER 23. Also, I am thankful to have a third parent class rep, Carla Dyck, who will work alongside Dolores Tully and Heidi Vasko. Thank you ladies!

Wednesday, October 15

There is a bake sale happening tomorrow at lunch. All items are $1 and the money goes to Anna's House orphanage in Ethiopia. Things to remember:

    - Gym clothes are being sent home today. Please ensure they are back at school by Friday for          Intramurals.
    -PLEASE CHARGE DEVICES EACH NIGHT! Several students are coming to school with their devices not fully charged and this causes problems during the day.

Today we started a unit on internet safety called "Digital passport". A family letter is going home today to give you an idea of the content that was covered.

October is here!

Today your child is bringing home 3 maps that we have been working on in class, along with several blank maps. We will be having a mapping quiz on Thursday, October 9th.  It will be on the provinces, capital cities, regions of Canada and the 15 waterways that I have chosen. Please have your child use the blank maps as practice. The test will be matching so there's no need to worry too much about spelling. The Boston Pizza home reading has also started. Please fill in the form for the month of October and return for a free kids meal.

Friday is almost here!

Just a reminder that Fridays are busy days in Grade 5! Bible memory is due and it's also spelling test day.  Many students have been forgetting about Bible memory. The September memory verses have been shared with your child and can be found on their google drive. Tomorrow we look forward to hearing presentations from Jax, Ty, Jia Jun, Joel, Noah, Bella and Ishraj about their personal artifacts. The remaining students will present Monday and Tuesday. A & E folders

Today your child will be bringing home a yellow duotang entitled "assessment and evaluation". Please look through some of the work we have been doing and sign each page. Please return to school as soon as possible. The duotang will go home every couple of weeks. We have started our personal artifacts presentations in class. I'm looking forward to the rest of the presentations!

Terry Fox Run tomorrow!

Tomorrow we will have our annual Terry Fox run. We are encouraging everyone to bring a loonie or twoonie to put towards cancer research. Come and join us! It looks like it will be a beautiful day! Also, I have shared a bible review document with the students to help them prepare for their Bible quiz tomorrow. Please have them take a peek at it this evening. A reminder that our library class falls on Day 4 on the cycle. And lastly, the bible verse due this Friday is attached.

Monday, September 22

Today was the last day that students were given class time to finish their 3 personal artifacts paragraphs. Presentations will start on Wednesday. Also, there will be 2 short quizzes this week. On Wednesday we will have a quiz on the 7 days of creation. On Thursday we will have a math quiz that will cover place value, rounding and value of digits. We have done lots of work in class to prepare for both of the quizzes. Have a wonderful evening!

Sunday, September 21

I hope everyone had a great weekend. Starting on Wednesday, students will begin their presentations on their personal artifacts. Please have your child tell you what day they signed up for. I have given the students lots of freedom with options of how to present. We will finish up our paragraphs for this  project tomorrow. I'm looking forward to learning more about everyone! Also, please remember that bible memory is due every Friday. Students can say the verse to me at any point during the day (or sooner if they wish).

Poster contest

     It was nice to connect with so many parents this evening at our Meet the Teacher BBQ. Thanks to all who came by the classroom. To those of you who couldn't make it, please feel free to pop into the classroom at any time.
     Tomorrow the students will get their first chance to help Mr. Janzen with collecting the recycling. It's a Grade 5 tradition! Also, students will have their first spelling test and bible memory is due.
     Lastly, today I told the students about an optional poster contest that is being run by the Prairie Livestock Expo. If your child is interested in entering, please let me know and I will forward more information to you. Have a wonderful evening!

Picture Day

Personal Artifacts Project

Today students were given an outline of a project that we started in class. Please take a moment to have your child show you the outline on their google drive. Today we brainstormed ideas and tomorrow we will start writing paragraphs. Also, just a reminder that TOMORROW IS PICTURE DAY!

Artifact Group Work

Today students worked in small groups to re-construct an artifact, finding clues about the past and the people that once lived in Canada. Please remember to check the "homework" section of the blog. We have a bible memory verse due on Friday as well as our first spelling test.

Under the sea

Today we worked hard on painting our underwater pictures using all of the colors on our color wheel. We look forward to displaying them for our Meet the teacher BBQ next week. Also, please remember that Friday is the day that Bible memory is due. Some students forgot about that today! Have a wonderful weekend!

A day of blogging

Today students created their own blog. Students will be using this blog to keep track of homework and assignments as well as to display different forms of writing.

What a wonderful start to Grade 5! We enjoyed our first choir and art class today. Please take note of the purple permission slip being sent home with your child today. It is regarding Phys ed classes being held off site. Please return this slip on Monday. I am also posting our first memory verse that will be due on Friday, Sept. 12th. Happy weekend everyone!

Raining Cats and dogs!

Today we had indoor recess because of the rain. Today your child has brought home a copy of their email address and password. Also, the boys have gym tomorrow so please bring your gym clothes if you haven't already!

We had a great first day in Grade 5! It was so nice to re-connect with old friends and to welcome new ones. Just a reminder to students to charge their device tonight and bring it to school tomorrow. See you then!

Welcome Parents and Students!

I am very excited to start the new school year, as I hope all you new grade 5 students are as well! Parents, I am looking forward to getting to know all of you. Please feel free to stop in during the first few days to see the classroom or to meet me in person.

I will be using this blog to post all important messages and reminders. It will also be a place to find out daily homework, and often will have links to assignments. Any paper copies of school forms that your child receives will still be going home with them. Please use this blog to post questions, or to refer to for messages and important dates.
